How to become a more positive person

With lots of us suffering from low happiness in the workplace and various scary things happening in the world at the moment, it's sometimes hard to see the positives in life. Learning to bring out the 'glass half full' side of you is a skill in itself if you're not always a positive person, but staying positive can lead to even more happiness and success.

"Things could always be worse"

Knowing when to bring this phrase out in your own life is much easier than preaching it to a friend who's having a crisis.

However, think about this: you're on my website which means you have a laptop, which means you have internet, which means it's highly likely you have a roof over your head, food in the fridge, clothes on your body etc. Suddenly boy problems, work problems, or that man who road raged you this morning seems very trivial indeed. Don't let things put you in a bad mood, put on your feel good song and blast it loud. Be thankful for everything you have, after all any situation could always be worse!

Practise positivity in everything you do

When you're feeling down, or doing something that perhaps you don't like do two things: 1. learn to see the funny side or 2. write down three positive outcomes of the situation. Once you get into a routine of doing this, you'll end up consciously seeing the funny side or assessing the outcomes without having to think about it. Judge the outcome and try to outweigh the negatives.

Surround yourself with happiness

Surrounding yourself with negative friend or family always has an adverse effect. It's probably easier said than done, but try to see less of negative people, and surround yourself with people who build you up and bring out your best side.

Do the things you love to do

To become a more positive person, learn to not give a f*ck about every little thing. If going to a party is going to make you less happy than sitting at home with your dog - don't go! Try reading Sarah Knight's "The Life Changing Magic of Not Giving A F**k"

Don't like your job? Change something or Quit.

If a job is really making you unhappy, spend time thinking of ways to change your unhappiness. Think about what's actually making you unhappy, then think of ways to change this. E.g. if someone you work is giving you grief, then try to change teams, or raise the issues you have with someone in HR. If possible, maybe even raise your issues with the person directly. Honesty is always the best policy.

If it's actually just the job you hate and you want to be doing something else, put a plan in place to make it happen. Someone I know wanted to be in the food industry. It took her a couple of years, but she saved up and now goes to cookery school full time at the weekend. She quit her marketing job at an agency and managed to find one working for a food company in their marketing department!

Remember, there is always a solution.

Do one thing a week to treat yourself

Treating yourself once a week is all part of showing yourself love and becoming more positive. Treating yourself means doing something that makes you happy - whether that's buying a new top from ASOS, taking some 'me' time to read a book, going for a massage or sitting down to enjoy a meal with your friends - do at least one grand gesture of self-love per week.
