How to Write the Perfect Instagram Biography

On Instagram, you have a very limited amount of space to grab someone's attention. That's why it's so important to make the most of the space and craft the best bio for your company. Here we'll explore what makes up the perfect Instagram Biography and how to write one.

It might take a bit of trial and error to get your biography completely right, but usually a good Instagram biography should:

  • Convey concisely what your business does
  • Tell your followers how they can find you

...all while showing the personality of your company and prompting your customers/page visitors to take an action. Here are a few things to consider when putting together the perfect Instagram Biography.

Profile picture

Most people tend to use a picture of their products or their logo. Make sure it's relevant to your business and if you can make sure it's original. It needs to be as eye catching and appealing in that little circle as it is in it's full glory!

Username & Name

Make sure you make your handle the same all across Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. You'll want to make yourself as easy to find as possible. Don't worry if you've already got your usernames set up - you can still change them.

Your name appears at the top of your profile and is originally displayed as your @ handle. Some people like to change this to the name of the brand with capitals, or in other cases they like to use it as a tag line. Whichever you choose, do it wisely because your page name will appear in search.

Bio

Here you have 150 characters to get across to potential followers exactly what you do, where to find you and get your visitors to take an action.

For example, our Instagram bio (see below) tells followers what we do (Social Media Management and Digital Consultancy), where we are (London and Bournemouth) and tells followers that they will get a daily digital tip for following.

How to write a good biography

As a general rule of thumb (and if the character count allows) here is an easy template you can use to construct your Instagram Biography.

1. Who are you/ What do you do?

2. Where can we find you?

3. Why should we follow you?

If you've got more characters left you could even add in a hashtag people can use to tag you.

Layout

Wondering how people beautifully construct their bio as a list? e.g. Simplee Aloe?

It's so simple! All you need to do is construct your Bio in the 'notes' app on your phone, making sure everything is on the line you want it to be on, then just copy and paste over. If you try to construct it in the box on Instagram it just won't work.

The only thing to be aware of is that it won't look the same on a computer if someone visits your profile on the Instagram website:

Examples and Inspiration:

Tagline

For well recognised brands such as Ted Talks, using your brands tagline can be effective in your biography. Ted delivers inspirational talks on all kinds of different topics so here we have an inspiring quote which resonates with the brand.

Official Instagram Accounts

Instagram will choose who gets the verified blue tick and when, however for brands who don't have it yet, some choose to either put it in their name or biography that they are the "official" account for that brand. Anyone can set up an account on social media, and unfortunately this also means there are a lot of fake accounts out there. Take Zara for example:

Branded Hashtag

Topshop encourages users to take action, and offers the opportunity for people to appear on their page using #TopshopStyle. It a great way to connect with your followers and encourage user generated content.

Minimalism

Gucci reflects the minimalism of their brand by saying nothing much at all. It tells followers where to find them on snapchat, which is a tactic often used by businesses on Instagram so that their followers can find them anywhere.

Testimonials

Peggy Porschen Cakes in London tells followers how good their cakes are with a quote from Vanity Fair. They then sweeten the deal by telling followers they can buy cakes online by clicking the link in their bio.

Shop the look

Many bloggers use their bio to tell followers where to shop the clothes they see on Instagram. If you've got a shop on your website, another website sells your products, or you use an affiliates scheme as a blogger you'll be able to direct users straight to buying your product without hassle. Just make sure your shop is mobile friendly as most traffic will be coming from Instagram.
