How To Make 2018 Your Year!

The start of a new year for most of us marks the occasion of setting a new years resolution which are easier to break than they are to make! This year, rather than setting yourself the same old unrealistic goal that you know you won’t stick to, why not try setting yourself challenging but achievable smaller goals that will help you achieve what you really want to this year. Below are some tips on how to set yourself goals and make 2018 your best year yet

1. Decide what you want to achieve this year

Make this the year that you really stick to your new year's resolution! You’ve probably already decided on that one big thing you wish to achieve this year but why not make more than one resolution? Why not set monthly resolutions so you have smaller milestones to get excited about and complete each month? The smaller things in life that we often forget about can really make a difference to our lives and happiness. Setting yourself goals like going to the gym are great, but smaller goals like spending more time with your family or taking more time to yourself this year will really contribute to you having an amazing year!

2. Make it happen!

Once you've decided everything you want to achieve this year (or month) you need to create a strategy of how you will achieve it. If your goal is to learn a new language, do you know what language? Have you done research? Do you need to enroll on a course? Can you afford the course? It’s important to take time to really plan out how you are going to achieve your goals to ensure they really happen this year and you don't just keep putting them off! A useful tip to motivate yourself is to reward yourself with a little something every time you complete one of your goals.

3. Set something every week that you want to make a habit

They say that it takes 21 days to make something a habit. Setting yourself weekly targets will allow you to make the changes you wish to make this year a habit! Whether it’s to drink more water, be kinder, give to charity, eat a healthier diet or read more, the longer you stick at it the easier it will become. So for example, if one of your goals this year is to ensure you are drinking at least 2 litres of water every day, set yourself daily targets of water intake and reward yourself if you complete it. It’ll soon become habit and you won’t even have to think about it!

4. Accept that it’s sometimes ok to mess up

Often the majority of people who make resolutions/challenges break them within the first week and then completely give up on the idea all together… Not good! Set your goals and really try to achieve them but understand that if one day you skip the gym or eat the chocolate bar, it’s not the end of the world! Just carry on trying and soon you will get out of your bad habits and find it a lot easier to achieve your goals! Just keep going!

5. Learn something new!

Taking time to expand your knowledge and learn new things is really important for self development. Learning is essential for staying up to date in a world which is constantly changing and it will allow you to keep moving forward, particularly in your work life. Not only will learning a new skill boost your self esteem, help you grow as a person but it can also open the doors to different opportunities and gives you the chance to try new experiences which you may love! So this year, focus on bettering yourself by taking any opportunity that is thrown at you to learn something new and make an effort to expand your current knowledge with a class or course. There are tons of free online courses which you can easily access to learn a new skill, give it a go!
