How To Write Copy For Your New Website To Boost Your Google Ranking

Websites and blogs are a crucial element to a business. However, due to the amount of online competition, driving traffic to your website/blog is becoming increasingly difficult. As you’re probably aware, Google and other search engines rank content according to how relevant/useful they think that content is to visitors. In order to up your SEO ranking and get your website higher up on the search engine results page, you need to understand how SEO works and what things to avoid while writing your website content to ensure your SEO score isn’t being dragged down without you even knowing!

Below are 4 of our top tips to consider when writing your website content so you can boost your SEO ranking and drive traffic to your website:

1. Keywords!

‘Keywords’ are the combinations of words or phrases that users type in search engines when they look for content. To determine your keywords, think about what your audience would type into Google when searching for your product. Once you’ve got your list, use those key words while writing the content for your website. Google uses keywords to index what content is more relevant to a particular user. So, in order to make your website discoverable by your target audience, you need to use these keywords within your content.

There are certain areas on your website where it is more beneficial to use your keywords. These include titles, subtitles, in the first paragraph of your content, text for hyperlinks (text that when clicked, directs people to another page), meta tags (tags in the coding which tells Google what your content is about) and finally image/file names - having your image names 1234.jpg won’t improve your SEO, use your keywords!

TOP TIP: Don’t use the same keywords over and over again, in order to convince Google that you are providing good quality content organically, you need to switch up your key words! If you use the same keywords over and over, Google will penalise you and your content won't be as visible.

2. Choose your headlines wisely!

Headers and titles are a vital part to gaining a good SEO score. While composing your headlines, think about:

1) Your keywords - use keywords in your title but remember to switch them up and not use the same ones over and over again. Google uses click through rate to determine how relevant you are for a specific keywords, if your click through rate is low your rankings will drop, if its high you will be ranked higher.

2) Use a number - Using a number in the headline is a great way to improve your SEO score eg “10 healthy lunch ideas”.

3) Consider your target audience - Making sure you don’t become too focused on improving your Google ranking and start writing your content for Google rather than your audience is crucial for a good SEO score. Google’s aim is to provide visitors with good quality content, no matter how many key words you’ve used, if your content doesn’t read well and appeal to your audience, Google will see straight through you and your ranking will decrease.

3. Use links!

Using links in your website makes your page more discoverable by visitors. Placing links not only improves the user experience, but it’s a great way to build traffic to your site. Just make sure that the pages you are linking to are high quality and that there are no broken links as this will dramatically decrease your ranking!

4. Perfect your tags and meta descriptions.

Tags are labels which categorise your content and the meta descriptions are the part of text that appears under your title on the search engine results. While composing your tags and meta descriptions, consider your relevant keywords that people are going to be searching for and include them here! Both tags and meta descriptions are crucial for informing visitors what your content is about and encouraging them to click! Both of these also help Google determine what your content is about, and rank you accordingly.
